What is Co-op?

Cooperative education is an academic program that enables students to alternate classroom studies with career-based experiences in industry. Cooperative education is also an extension of the classroom; a learning experience designed to integrate classroom theory with practical experience and professional development.

Co-op is full-time, paid work, designed to maximize the students' education with practical career experience. Case co-op assignments are typically for two separate seven-month periods, each period consisting of a summer and a contiguous spring or fall semester. The program does not add or reduce the amount of necessary coursework, but rearranges the academic course load. Approximately one year of additional time is necessary to participate in the practical training and to complete academic requirements.

Scheduled times for co-op vary among departments. Curriculum sheets designed by the student's major department indicate the optimal co-op sequence. These curriculum sheets are available upon request.

The Case co-op staff often makes on-site visits to monitor student performance and assure a successful partnership. For each co-op term, students are required to complete two written reports which are reviewed by the co-op staff and faculty in their respective departments.

Employers typically pay two-thirds of what a beginning bachelor's graduate would earn. Some employers base the pay on the number of credit hours the student has earned. Providing benefits are an option for the employer.
